A website is much more than just its visual design. The way a website is built has a significant impact on how your future clients, customers or members find and interact with it. Strategic web designers consider these key factors as they build your website.
As an entrepreneur you’ve got goals for days, and your website should be a tool to help you accomplish those goals. A beautiful design is great to have – a functional design is a MUST have. Beauty without function means your website is missing the mark. A strategic designer considers your goals, target audience and brand image to create a website that fulfills your business needs.
Search engine optimization (SEO) is a key part of any marketing strategy as it helps get eyeballs on your website. The overall goal is to rank higher in search results (because who wants to be on page 1,000,000 of Google…?). The world of SEO is vast and there are a ton of ways to improve SEO, some simple and some incredibly complex. Hiring a strategic designer who has a fundamental understanding of how Google reads and understands your website ensures you have covered your SEO basics.
Strategic design prioritizes website performance. Slow loading pages are more likely to cause users to leave the website before interacting with it. Site speed not only impacts the overall user experience, but as of 2021 speed is one of the main metrics Google looks at when ranking websites. Laggy websites just don’t cut it anymore. A strategic designer understands how to create a website that runs as smoothly as your business.
Approximately 50% (that’s right – HALF) of web traffic comes from mobile devices. Your potential customers, clients and members are using their phones more than ever. It’s not enough to have a site that looks good on desktop anymore. If your users struggle to use your website on their mobile devices, you are missing out on a lot of potential website traffic.
Security is important. It’s not the most exciting part of designing websites (I mean maybe it is for a cybersecurity expert), but you need to have basic protections in place to keep your data and your users’ data safe. Hiring a professional gives you the peace of mind that proper security measures are in place. The number one security issue I tend to notice is a missing SSL certificate. This can cause some browsers to block access to your site or warn visitors before proceeding, which severely impacts the trust of your potential customers.
Discovery is the most important - and typically the longest - phase of the website design process. During deep discovery, we will clarify your goals, identify your target audience, outline the necessary functionality, and brainstorm creative ideas for the design of your website. We will also develop a deep understanding of the content that will fill the website. This is where the strategy happens.
Design is my favorite part of any project! During the design stage, we will be focused on the look and feel of the website. Based on the creative brainstorming from discovery, I will create mock ups of the site using a design tool and share with you as a PDF. Designing specs this way allows us to more easily make revisions and get the aesthetic just right. This is a collaborative stage where we make sure the design perfectly fits all the content and is in line with your brand vision.
Once we have a final approved design, you get to kick back and relax as we move to the development stage where all our planning gets put into action. This is where I take our design and turn it into a functioning website by building it in WordPress. I will configure all the necessary plugins including SEO, security and analytics. Once development is complete, I will make sure the site is backed up and ready to go for migration.
This is when we celebrate! We'll go through final checks and testing to ensure the site runs exactly how it needs to. I'll also walk you through the back end of your website and leave you with a brief video tutorial so you can add content if you'd like in the future. If you don't want to ever touch the back end I totally get it! Fortunately I offer maintenance plans and retainers to keep your website up-to-date and running smoothly so you always have peace of mind.
The design process varies widely dependent on the size and complexity of the project, how quickly materials are received and feedback time. Most brand design projects require 3-4 weeks, while the average website design project takes about 6-8 weeks to complete.
Currently I have one brand package available at $1000. For websites, pricing starts at $2,800 for a 5 page custom website build, but each project is unique. The website size, customizations, and additional services required will all impact the pricing estimate.
